India's first independent International Film Festival was hosted by the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image(MAMI) in November 1997 and was inaugurated by the world-acclaimed director Mrinal Sen. This non-competitive festival showcased 65 films from 23 countries, and created a platform for the FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics) award , which was instituted for the first time at an Indian Festival.

  Awards

Two other awards were presented, namely The Lifetime Achievement Award to evergreen and graceful actor Mr. Dev Anand and an award for making a significant contribution to Indian Cinema for over 25 years which was presented to renowned film director Mr. Adoor Gopalkrishnan.

An added feature of the festival was an Open Forum or Chauraha, that facilitated dialogue and interaction between the delegates and the directors, producers and the actors who were present.
