11th Mumbai Film Festival spreads the World Cinema flavor on October 31st Mumbai, October 31, 2009: With over more than 40 films screenings at three different locations on Saturday, November 1, the 11th Mumbai Film Festival is rearing to go! The flavor for today was dominated by World Cinema movies from various countries of the world. The press had an opportunity to interact with the cast and crew members of the handpicked best movies from different parts of the world. Starting from our very own Kashmir was Zero Bridge (USA/India). Addressing the press, director Tariq Tapa and actor Mohammad Imran Tapa shared their experience on the film. Zero Bridge is a directorial venture of New York born Tariq Tapa and is the first Kashmiri film to go Global. It was recently screened at the Venice International Film Festival. What calls for attention is the fact that the movie has been a directed, acted and edited by the same family, one can say it’s completely nurtured by the same family. Director Tariq Tapa even edited and provided sound for the film. . Zero Bridge is a about a young Kashmiri lad Dilawar, aged 17 with a rebellious nature living on the outskirts of Srinagar city with his strict uncle Ali, a mason who took in Dilawar after he was abandoned by his adoptive mother. French film Legal Aid is a directorial venture of Hannelore Veronique Cyre and stars Roschdy Zem, Jean-Phillipe Ecoffey and Sophie Guillemin in it. The film revolves around a criminal Lawyer Antonie Lahoud, aged 40 who seems to be pretty enthusiastic, but disappointed by his workplace. I Am Not Your Friend film is Palfi Gyorgy’s directorial venture and showcases actors like Csaba Czene, Kata Farkas, Kamilla Fatyol, Csaba Gosztonyi,Corbisier Kim, Gyongyver Orszagh, Zsolt Pall, Istvan Szule and Eszter Toth. The whole film is a crazy love circle where everyone seeks someone else, but not the one who loves them. It plays around few characters who form this vicious circle of love finding and still end up being with the one’s they don’t love. What makes this film interesting is the fact that it’s been acted by nine amateur actors and instantly unfolds their reactions and ideas at the beginning. Apart form all this there was a OPEN FORUM : Presented by WWI, Institute for Film, Television and Media Arts in association with Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) Day 2 of Open Forum brought to the forefront, “The Importance of Craft in Cinema”, a subject not often discussed at film festivals and all the more, appreciated by the sizeable audience. As the moderator of the session, filmmaker, writer, lyricist and Reliance Big Entertainment chairman Amit Khanna put it, “technology has given filmmakers today, a mind-boggling array of tools to enable them to tell their stories in a different and more engaging manner.” Editor and educator Aruna Raje Patil believes that “knowing your tools , and about how best to use them in moving the story forward ,is important” and pointed out the pitfalls of craft overwhelming or overtaking the story. Film critic and writer Saibal Chatterjee said that it was imperative to differentiate between “art and artifice” and noted that “filmmakers attempting to dazzle audiences ended up making soulless films with a lot of craft.” Yet some filmmakers in going back to their roots have engaged the audience as they struck a balance between storytelling and craft.” Croatian director, Goran Devic, whose film Crnci is part of the festival, stressed the fact that it was “important to know everything possible and then choose what is right for a particular film”. “The aesthetics and the content of a film--the only complete art form-- come before the craft, “stated filmmaker Uday Shankar Pani. The director of Rock On!! (a film on a rock band which also connected beyond youth), Abhishek Kapoor was applauded as he declared, “Don’t waver in your intent; be true to your subject. Work closely with your team and make your choice of technology to give that look and texture to your film.” About MAMI: Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) is a body comprised of Indian film industry stalwarts which was founded in 1997 by late filmmaker Shri Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Noted filmmaker Shri Shyam Benegal heads the body that consists of film directors including: Yash Chopra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Karan Johar, renowned actresses Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan, actor-director Amol Palekar and Farhan Akhtar and the chairman of Reliance Big Entertainment Amit Khanna as Trustees.
